Senior Citizen’s Day is August 21, and you can use this time to spend the day with your favorite parent, grandparent or even aunt or uncle. The Villages, Florida is a popular destination for senior citizens, but it also offers a lot of activities to enjoy with the kids. Self Storage Services is sharing just how important it is to spend time with our older loved ones, along with things you can do to have a great time in and around The Villages!
Why You Should Celebrate Senior Citizen’s Day
Our elders are the last look into a lifetime and way of living that we ourselves will never experience. They have so much to teach us, if only we’re willing to listen. But more than that, roughly 25 percent of seniors experience depression, and many studies show that strong social networks do wonders for helping alleviate that. What’s more, staying active through exercise and mind/body work helps stave off the physical pain of growing older. The fact is, you have the ability to encourage and reinvigorate your loved one!
While your loved one might be having a great time on their own at The Villages, here are a few things you and the family can do together any day of the week.
Help Them Organize
They may have just moved into their new place, or are considering downsizing. A lifetime of living brings a lifetime of collecting, and it can get a bit overwhelming for them to part with their cherished items. Not to mention unpacking and organizing is a physically strenuous effort.
Lucky for both of you, there are a wide range of storage units in and around The Villages, so find one that fits your needs and help them figure out what should be stored. As you go through all of the items, be ready to hear some amazing, hilarious and heartfelt stories that each bring to mind. You’ll learn more than you could ever imagine by taking a trip down memory lane.
Get Out of the House
Head to the Barnstorm Theater for a fun few hours watching a new movie, and take advantage of their kids and senior discounts. Maybe they’d prefer the “real theater” with a play at the Sonnentag Theater at the Icehouse. Or get them outside in Sholom Park, and any of the local area walking trails and nature reserves, as walking through nature is magical for your mood. You could even hit the golf course with them, and with dozens to choose from, you’ll have lots of options.
Bring Something to Them
Get the kids involved with their grandparents or other great relatives by bringing some crafts or activities that they can do together. Croquet, horseshoes and other backyard games can get the kids and grandparents together, and encourage the grandparents to teach the kids a thing or two about playing games. Even just getting the family together for a big cookout is a simple yet fun way to spend time together.
While we should take time each week to check in and spend time with our older loved ones, Senior Citizen’s Day is also a great day to check in with those who aren’t lucky enough to have a large support group. Taking your child to “adopt” a grandparent will enrich both their lives – and yours, as well! Self Storage Services would like to take this time to thank our seniors for the love, time and cherished memories they’ve given us our whole lives. We hope that in even a small way, we’re able to pay back all of the support they’ve given us over the years!
