Materials You Will Need
Order boxes, bubble wrap, tape, rope, and packing supplies in advance. Choose boxes that are not too large because you will need to lift them. Reserve a cart, order a ramp, or arrange to use a delivery entrance, and confirm their availability.
Preparing Large Items
Move large furniture that is taken apart rather than attempting to lift it assembled. Place any screws and other small items in a small, sealable bag, and tape it to the furniture. Clean all large appliances before the move. Put removable cushions of furniture in trash bags. Label the bags. Tape plastic or other protective covering around furniture. Separate filled drawers from dressers. Cover filled drawers with plastic to protect the contents.
Remove bulbs from all your fixtures and lamps. Pack the bulbs in bubble wrap or sectioned boxes, so they are secure and unlikely to break.
Packing the Cab
Do not assume that you will pack everything in the rental truck. Pack medication, important documents, such as a birth certificate or medical records, tools, scissors, tape, a tape measure, a flashlight, and an overnight bag in the cab. Place your computer and any other small, breakable electronic equipment in the cab.
Packing the Trailer
Load appliances and furniture near the front the trailer. Place longer items in the truck. Tie down any items that may move.
Boxes should be stacked so that they are packed very tightly together. If there is space between boxes, fill the area with pillows or other soft, cushiony items.
